In recent years, research has gained many new and surprising insights into Nero. This unique exhibition, Nero – Emperor, Artist and Tyrant follows the aim of employing the latest scholarly findings to view Nero in a new light.
The exhibition follows a chronological overview of Nero’s life and career: his youthful rise to become heir to the throne; the murder of his power-hungry mother, Agrippina, as a turning point in the first years of his government; his passion and preference for the arts. Nero’s descent from the young heir apparent and bearer of hopes to the hated tyrant as he lost grasp on reality is beautifully and thoughtfully illustrated in the exhibition by original artefacts and works of art coming from Italy and beyond.
