Description

This poetic exhibition of paintings, coming from a select group of Italian museums, beautifully illustrates the evolution of landscape painting in Italy from its early roots as background settings in paintings of the 1500s to its role as protagonist in paintings of the 17th and 18th centuries.
The exhibition begins in the 15th century when nature was portrayed according to a concept established by Leonardo da Vinci in which landscape provided background settings for the pictorial subject. The exhibition passes into the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries and the golden age of landscape painting in Italy. Now nature – the countryside, expanses of grass, wooded hillsides, rivers winding to the sea – becomes the protagonist, victorious over time and the artifice of man.
