Art and literature are confronted with the problem of the representation of reality. Painting and the words have never been independent of each other. The idea of a synthesis between different arts became more important during the 19th century, especially during the Symbolism. Once their autonomy from reality had been affirmed, the different artistic languages were defended as complementary to each other, a concept that was strengthened by the historical avant-gardes.
The exhibition offers more than 150 artworks by artists as Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, Joan Miró, Alberto Giacometti, Óscar Domínguez, Françoise Gilot, Federico Castellón, Marc Eemans, Max Ernst, Gabriel Belot, Jean Cocteau, Angelina Beloff, Jean Arp, Frans Masereel, Wifredo Lam and Alexander Calder, and offer an opportunity to think about the relationship between the visual arts and literature.
