Description

A source of inspiration for surrealists like Salvador DalĂ, Marie Laurencin and Max Ernst, Alice was created in 1862 by Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, better known by his pen name Lewis Carroll. An Oxford scholar  with degrees in art and mathematics, Carroll told a story to ten-year-old Alice Liddell and her sisters during a boating trip in the summer of 1862. At the insistence of Alice, his inspiration, Carroll put the tale down in writing and presented the manuscript, illustrated with his own drawings, to her as a Christmas gift in 1863.
