An exciting opportunity has now arisen for a Displays Officer to join our Exhibitions and Displays team. We are looking for a highly motivated, creative person with excellent communication and project management skills.

National Museums Scotland is one of the leading museum groups in Europe. With one of the largest and most diverse collections in the world, we are responsible for the acquisition, preservation and display of a substantial part of Scotland’s cultural, historic and national heritage. Millions of local and international visitors enjoy our four museums each year, and we also introduce our collections to a much wider audience than can physically visit our museums through, touring exhibitions, loans, community engagement, digital programmes and research.

We have recently invested over £120 million in our sites and have more than doubled our visitor numbers, with over 3 million people now visiting our four museums. Alongside this, we have continued to transform how we communicate and engage with our audiences. 2019 saw the completion of our Masterplan for the National Museum of Scotland with the opening of three new galleries dedicated to Ancient Egypt, East Asia and the Art of Ceramics.

An exciting opportunity has now arisen for a Displays Officer to join our Exhibitions and Displays team. We are looking for a highly motivated, creative person with excellent communication and project management skills.

As Displays Officer with National Museums Scotland you will:
– Be responsible for the overall development and delivery of displays projects as directed by the Exhibitions & Displays Manager, ensuring projects are delivered on time and to budget.
– Be responsible for managing multi-disciplinary displays projects at National Museums Scotland, ensuring effective communication and that team members from other departments and external contractors understand their roles and responsibilities on projects.
– Be responsible for liaison with other relevant National Museums Scotland colleagues to coordinate content for displays.
– Ensure National Museums Scotland project methodology is used as appropriate for projects, ensuring the Exhibitions & Displays Manager is aware of key risks.
– Provide assistance on the tendering, procurement and appointment process for commissioning of external services in line with National Museums of Scotland’s financial procedures and manage project related contractors and consultants effectively.
– Manage project budgets in accordance with National Museums Scotland financial procedures, ensuring displays projects are delivered on time and to budget.
– Be committed to good health and safety and access practice and ensure familiarity with National Museum Scotland’s health and safety and access policies, procedures and guidelines.

The successful candidate will have at least 3 years’ professional experience in developing and delivering high quality gallery displays in a museum or heritage environment. You will have experience of managing the delivery of displays refreshes and rotations as well as dealing with issues regarding maintenance, compliance and security. Strong project management and building relationship skills are crucial to the success of this role as is an up-to-date knowledge and understanding of audience needs in museums in the UK and beyond. You will work with multi-disciplinary internal project teams as well as external resources to ensure completion of projects to agreed objectives; and you will enjoy working to find solutions and provide expert advice in a highly paced environment.
