DEGAS ! PICASSO ! LEGER ! Dance and circus.

Description

The body, in its fragility and power, in everyday gestures or in dance, was one of the great protagonists of art between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

This exhibition explores the evolution of the representation of the body in motion, from the Impressionists — with particular attention to Edgar Degas, master of the suspended moment and the figure captured in motion — to the disjointed and dynamic forms of Pablo Picasso and Fernand Léger‘s Cubism.

This exhibition journey explores the languages of the twentieth century to explore how the body has been represented, interpreted, and transformed. From the silent and private dance of Degas’s ballerinas, captured in moments of pause, concentration, and fatigue, we move to Picasso’s scenic experiments with “Le Tricorne”, where the body enters the theatrical space as a dynamic, stylized form, playing on volumes and colors that reinvent its presence. Finally, we arrive at Léger’s collective and industrial vision, in which the body becomes a cog in the wheel of modernity, a rhythmic and functional element of a mechanical choreography.

The exhibition seeks to establish a dialogue between the sensitivity of intimate gesture and the mechanical and impersonal vision of the modern body, tracing a path that questions perception, space, and time.

The exhibition offers an unprecedented dialogue between Impressionism and Cubism. Through a carefully selected selection of engravings and lithographs, the exhibition invites the public to explore the profound differences in how these artists depicted the human body.
On the one hand, the Impressionists — with their sensitivity to light and movement — rendered fluid figures, immersed in everyday life, often captured in spontaneous and natural gestures. In their works, the body is evoked rather than defined, suggested by light, vibrant lines that seem to dance
on the paper.
