Description

From the renegade woman of silent cinema to the actors challenging representation today, Goddess celebrates the collective power and resilience of women on screen.

Curated by ACMI Curator Bethen Johnson, Goddess features 150+ objects including 20+ iconic costumes, behind-the-scenes material, props and sketches, presenting audiences with unexpected stories behind significant screen moments.

Goddess arrives as the screen industry is undergoing a long-awaited reckoning. By re-examining cinema history through a feminist lens, this exhibition charts the evolution of women’s representation on screen and reframes the stars and stories we think we know.

Chronicling the representation of women across 120 years of cinema, Goddess focusses a lens on extraordinary talents, celebrating the boundary-pushing actors who have shaped and challenged our views of womanhood through film.

Premiering at ACMI, April 2023, Goddess tours internationally from April 2024.

GODDESS IN THE MACHINE (INTERACTIVE):

Created by Junior Major in collaboration with artist Jess Herrington, this playful digital interactive was inspired by visions of a future Goddess.

Goddess in the Machine allows visitors to engage with, distort and manipulate a real-time video of their face by trying on a wearable artwork. Artist Jess Herrington has created a series of abstracted masks using Stable Diffusion – a text-to-image AI – which have then been adapted into 3D digital filters. Visitors can choose a mask, download their portrait onto their device, and share it on social media. A social interactive, whereby visitors can watch others self-adorn and experiment as well as participate themselves. Three individual stations have been created, with audience interaction lasting approximately two minutes.
