Description

A source of inspiration for surrealists like Salvador Dalí, Marie Laurencin and Max Ernst, Alice was created in 1862 by Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, better known by his pen name Lewis Carroll. An Oxford scholar  with degrees in art and mathematics, Carroll told a story to ten-year-old Alice Liddell and her sisters during a boating trip in the summer of 1862. At the insistence of Alice, his inspiration, Carroll put the tale down in writing and presented the manuscript, illustrated with his own drawings, to her as a Christmas gift in 1863.

The exhibition immerses visitors in the famous book by Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland (1865), and in the surrealist and surprising world of its main character. The exhibition includes an extraordinary oil painting by Salvador Dalí in which he reflects on the theme of time (one of the great themes of Alice in Wonderland), as well as a sculpture by the artist. The exhibition also shows prints by Salvador Dalí, Max Ernst and Marie Laurencin and illustrations by John Tenniel for the novel’s first editions. Through the works that the masters of the avant-garde, Dalí, Ernst and Laurencin made upon being impressed by Lewis Carroll’s work and the prints of the original illustrations by John Tenniel for the first editions, visitors will be able to move through the timeless novel and visit the diverse scenes from the fantasy wonderland. In addition to the prints and illustrations, the exhibition is rounded off with the screening of some films inspired by the story of Alice in Wonderland. The collection includes more than 70 pieces with oil painting, sculpture, prints, illustrations, photographs and film.
