Itadakimasu explores the deep connection between food, culture, and Japanese animation. The exhibition shows how in anime every dish is never casual but becomes a vessel of emotions, relationships, and traditions. Visitors are invited to an immersive journey through nine thematic rooms, each dedicated to a unique aspect of Japanese cuisine and culture. From the Kami Sanctuary, which celebrates gratitude and respect for nature, to bentĹŤ boxes carefully prepared according to tradition. The exhibition intertwines visual, interactive, and sensory elements to tell stories of everyday life, friendship, and personal growth.
Audiences can get a taste of genuine environments, from ramen bars that resemble Tokyo’s eateries to street food stalls that recreate summer festivals like Tanabata, to the most evocative seasonal celebrations, like Hanami.
Sculptures made with the shokuhin sampuru technique—faithful reproductions of Japanese dishes— stand alongside ukiyo-e prints and chirashi from Studio Ghibli, creating a dialogue between traditional and contemporary art, between reality and imagination. The journey also includes references to Western cuisine reinterpreted in a Japanese style (yōshoku) and themed cafés, where sweets and drinks turn into delightful wonders.
Through images, installations, video recipes, and interactive content, Itadakimasu reveals how food in anime is an act of sharing and gratitude: a bridge between fantasy and reality that offers a multisensory and engaging experience of Japanese culture.
