Lundstrøm’s Eternal Blue
That is how painter Vilhelm Lundstrøm referred to the color of his backgrounds, often marked by a deep, saturated blue. Vilhelm Lundstrøm (1893–1950) is one of the most prominent and celebrated figures in Danish art, especially admired for his vibrant paintings of women and his compositions set against intense blue backdrops. The Kunstmuseum Brandts holds one of the most important collections of works by the artist.
In close collaboration with specialists from the Vejle Conservation Center, Newtec Engineering, and the University of Southern Denmark, this exhibition maps the layers of color and material in Lundstrøm’s paintings from the museum’s collection.
The exhibition offers a unique glimpse into the world of the artist and the work of the conservator. It demonstrates how laboratory research and cutting-edge technology can provide new insights into some of the museum’s most beloved works and help preserve them for future generations, if not for eternity.
The exhibition features 11 oil paintings on canvas and 7 drawings from the Kunstmuseum Brandts collection, with the possibility of additional loans from other institutions.
