Masters of Spanish Painting

The late 19th century is considered one of the most vibrant periods of

European painting, in which Spanish painters played a major role. The

exhibition offers a careful selection of works by the best Spanish artists of

this period, showing nearly one hundred artworks, among oil paintings,

watercolors and drawings, coming from five Spanish private collectors.

Great masters of the renown of Mariano Fortuny, Joaquín Sorolla and

Ignacio Zuloaga reveal the artistic splendour of the different pictorial

movements and themes produced in a period in which the growth of the

bourgeoisie encouraged the art market. First Rome and then Paris were

the two main destination cities for artists, art dealers and collectors.

The exhibition explores this period of great renewal in European painting,

which coincided with the beginning and development of Impressionism.

Orientalism, Luminism, with the light of the Mediterranean as the

protagonist, Portraits, and Spanish genre scenes, which made the

idealised vision of Spain fashionable in Europe, are the different sections

of the exhibition.
