For over four decades, Janette Beckman has captured the raw energy of youth culture, immortalizing the moments that have shaped generations. Her lens doesn’t just document history – it defines it. Rebels + Icons: The Photography of Janette Beckman presents the largest collection of her work ever assembled, offering a rare and immersive view of the transformational cultural movements she has documented throughout her career.
Beckman’s photography chronicles the individuality of 1970s British Punk, the revolutionary rise of Hip-Hop in 1980s New York, and the global pulse of fashion and activism that continues today. Her iconic portraits of artists like Salt-N-Pepa, Run DMC, Slick Rick, Debbie Harry, John Lydon, and more, reveal how music, street culture, and personal expression collide to reshape society.
The exhibition moves through distinct chapters of Beckman’s career, highlighting everything from her black-and-white street portraits of rebel subcultures to vivid collaborations with brands like Levi’s, Kangol, Dior, and Dapper Dan, where street style and fashion converge. Personal anecdotes shared throughout the gallery pull visitors closer to Beckman’s creative process and her deep connections with her subjects, including stories behind legendary images like the Islington Twins.
Rebels + Icons features more than 150 key photographs – rare archival prints, new collaborations, and never-before-seen images – alongside hundreds more of Beckman’s photographs displayed graphically, interactive elements, original films, and opportunities for visitors to engage with their own visual storytelling, inspired by Beckman’s love to teaching photography.
Making its worldwide debut at MOPOP, this exhibition celebrates Janette Beckman’s unparalleled role in documenting and shaping the cultural narratives of our time.
