Established by Royal Charter in 1907, Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales is one of the largest museums in the United Kingdom, and the most important cultural institution in Wales. The organization is the custodian of internationally significant, diverse collections and a leader in education and cultural participation.

Our purpose is to inspire people through our museums and collections to find a sense of well-being and identity, to discover, enjoy and learn bilingually, and to understand Wales’s place in the wider world.

Our work is based on the principle that culture is created by people and communities. Our collections and other resources partly come from the society of which we are part, and are continually renewed through our work with the public.

Job description

This work will be focused on three key areas:

  • Amgueddfa Cymru’s exhibitions in Wales including those sited at our seven museums and touring collaborations with other organisations across Wales. You will further develop our Exhibitions Strategy for Wales, implementing initiatives to improve diversity and inclusion at the Museum and exploring ways of developing exhibitions as platforms for discussion and

debate. This will be in line with our Vision, ‘Inspiring people, Changing lives’ and our ten-year Strategy (currently under development). Models of working will be developed to improve diversity and inclusion, and to ensure the involvement of diverse individuals with lived experience and communities across the protected characteristics in the creation and programming of our exhibitions.

  • Amgueddfa Cymru’s international touring programme is under development and you will be responsible for shaping and delivering our international touring strategy, establishing new ways of working with an international network of partnerships, maximizing the potential for income generation and celebrating Wales’ national collection across the world.
  • Developing digital and virtual exhibition experiences as a core part of our exhibition programme, for people to engage with who cannot physically visit our museums.

To achieve:

  • High-quality engaging exhibitions and experiences, which reflect the diversity of our communities, and inspire visitors of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Inclusive, relevant, and thought-provoking exhibitions, which explore why art, science, and history matter in society, and our role in supporting people’s cultural rights, learning, health and well-being.
  • Exhibitions developed and presented through the medium of Welsh and English, which encourage and support Welsh language learners as appropriate.
  • High quality international touring exhibitions, recognizing Wales’ national collection and Amgueddfa Cymru’s quality of work across the world.
  • High-value international partnerships networks.
  • Long-term collaborations with Wales based organisations from different sectors including culture, education, health, youth services and local authorities to provide social benefit.
  • Engaged users, participants and followers in person and online.
  • Sustainable business models with income targets met and high-level support from funders and sponsors.
  • Lower carbon exhibitions created with innovative solutions to supporting the environment.
  • Support for the foundational economy with local creative skills developed through volunteering, work-placements and apprenticeships.
