Description

Life in Portrait: Picturing Us is an exhibition celebrating the art of portraiture and its everyday relevance in our lives. Featuring key works from the National Portrait Gallery collection alongside specially created digital AV elements, the exhibition will be highly engaging and will illuminate the universal appeal of portraits today.

The exhibition explores how identities are forged through portraiture using the timeless themes of how we represent ourselves and those closest to us, including those we love, our family and our friends. We ask how these portraits are made, who they are for and where they are displayed. Whether on our phones, in our homes or on social media, we use portraits to construct, reflect on and communicate both our most intimate and our public selves.

The ultimate aim of the exhibition is to deepen visitors’ understanding and appreciation of their own relationship with portraiture.

Life in Portrait: Picturing Us will be made up of 75-85 key works from the National Portrait Gallery collection, reflecting over four centuries of portraiture in a variety of mediums. Immersive digital elements will further allow visitors to reflect on how they use portraiture in their own lives and to explore conversations and parallels across history.

The exhibition requires approximately 500 – 700 m2 in space and will be available to tour from 2028-2030.
