Museum of Failure is a touring exhibition of innovation gone wrong: products, services and ideas from some of the world’s best-known companies that didn’t work out. Visitors meet Google Glass, the Apple Newton, Colgate’s frozen lasagna, Harley-Davidson perfume, and many more. Each object comes with the story of what was attempted, why it failed, and what we can learn from it.
The tone is playful, but the idea underneath is serious. We rarely talk honestly about failure, yet our progress as a society depends on it. Visitors come to be entertained and leave with new thoughts on risk, creativity and the hidden cost of caution.
Since opening in Sweden in 2017, the exhibition has toured Los Angeles, New York, Shanghai, Taiwan, and Paris. It appeals to families, professionals, design and business audiences, and people who don’t usually visit museums. It also tends to attract strong press coverage. Beyond ticket sales, the exhibition’s business relevance makes it attractive for private corporate groups and events.
The exhibition is curated by psychologist Dr. Samuel West and can be adapted to different spaces, budgets and local audiences.
The exhibition is very flexible. It does not require much operating maintenance except for the interactive stations that need to be monitored daily. Some of the more expensive and delicate items require protective covering.
