Yōkai – Monsters, Spirits and Supernatural Creatures in Japanese Prints explores the fascinating world of Japanese monsters, ghosts and supernatural beings through around 160 historical prints from the Edo period. Blending folklore, art and imagination, the exhibition reveals how these strange creatures embodied the fears, anxieties, desires and beliefs of Japanese society.
From shape-shifting foxes and water spirits to vengeful ghosts and giant skeletons, yōkai inhabit both the natural and human worlds, appearing in city streets, theatres and legendary tales. Alongside masterpieces by great ukiyo-e artists, immersive installations and soundscapes guide visitors through an atmospheric journey into the darker, mysterious side of Japanese culture — where myth, emotion and everyday life meet.
